COVID-19 24th September 2020 – UPDATE Chancellor Announces new Job Support Scheme

The Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that furlough will end as planned on 31 October.  A new Job Support Scheme to be introduced from 1 November 2020 to top up wages over the winter. In order to qualify for the scheme, due to run for six months, employees must be working at least one third of normal hours and paid as normal for that work by their employer. The Government and Employers will then each pay one third of wages for hours not worked.  The states contribution is capped at £697.92 per month per worker.  Employers can still claim the £1000 one off Jobs Retention Bonus for formerly furloughed staff who remain in post until at least February.

COVID-19 Job Retention Bonus

The bonus – announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak as part of his Plan for Jobs – will see businesses receive a one-off payment of £1,000 for every previously furloughed employee if they are still employed by at least the end of February 2020.

The scheme is designed to continue to support jobs through the UK’s economic recovery from coronavirus by encouraging and helping employers to retain as many employees who’ve been on furlough as possible.
